Resurface the canal towpath between Willington and Burton to cycle quality (EPET421)

We the undersigned petition the council to Please consider cooperating with the Canal & River Trust to resurface the Trent & Mersey Canal towpath between Willington and the Dove Aqueduct, to make it a safe and practical cycle route.

The towpath between Willington and Burton is in theory safe, short and convenient to reach Burton. However, it is very bumpy and not cycleable in summer, and impossibly muddy in winter. Last year East Staffordshire District Council cooperated with the Canal & River Trust to resurface the towpath from the Dove Aqueduct through to Branston on the west of Burton and it is now in excellent condition. But the two miles in Derbyshire, from Willington to the aqueduct remains in poor condition. Resurfacing this would make the full length into Burton very convenient and safe, avoiding the dangerous A38 and the impractically long and hilly route via Repton/Newton Solney. Ideally you would also resurface the shorter section from Willington through to Mercia Marina, since much village foot traffic uses that section as well.
